The Island Institute is a non-profit dedicated to cultivating uncommon conversations about the nature of resilient communities--the web of human relationships and responsibilities, and our connections to the greater natural world. We use the literary arts as a means of inquiry into the core values of community and promote collaborative leadership as an avenue to deepen democratic principles of civic engagement.
The Island Institute sponsors four writers over the year who provide a variety of readings and workshops for the Sitka community. We have also hosted many community trainings and projects surrounding conscientious civic engagement.
We are pleased to be carrying on this new work from our new location on the Sheldon Jackson campus, joining Alaska Arts Southeast in their efforts to create a thriving educational center for the arts, humanities, and sciences on the site of the former college.
